The United States expressed today its support for calls demanding the formation of a special tribunal to try Russia over the Ukrainian war, an idea put forward by the European Union.
The US Al Hurra TV channel said quoting a US State Department official that the US supports the establishment of a special tribunal for war crimes against Ukraine, as an international court rooted in the Ukrainian judicial system, which includes international elements.
The official added that Washington aims to obtain great international support especially from their European partners and that the court’s headquarters be in a country in Europe.
This is the first time that the United States has explicitly declared its support for the establishment of a tribunal to look into the Russian war in Ukraine, a war which began on February 24, 2022.
This announcement comes days after the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant against Russian President Vladimir Putin on charges of committing a war crime by deporting Ukrainian children in the context of the war on Ukraine, however, Russia does not recognize the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court.
US Ambassador-at-Large for Global Criminal Justice Beth Van Schaack expressed her belief that such an international tribunal, rooted in the Ukrainian judicial system, will provide the best chance for justice.
