NCHRL: Increase in the overall number of immigrants residing in Libya.

The National Human Rights Commission in Libya (NHRCL) reported that the total number of immigrants living in Libya increased by 2% in December 2022, to 694,398 immigrants, representing more than 42 nationalities, as compared to August 31, 2022.

The commission said in a statement issued today that the numbers from the International Organization for Migration show that 54% of migrants reside in western Libya, 34% in the east, and 12% in the south, noting that most of the migrants in eastern Libya (66%) are from Egypt and Sudan. On the other hand, those coming from Niger and Chad made up the majority of immigrants in the south (87%) and western Libya (57%).

Sudan topped the list of refugees and asylum-seekers registered in Libya, among other nationalities, with more than 20,000 people, according to the latest update of UN statistics covering the first quarter of this year, that is, before the war that broke out in Sudan, while the collective expulsion of migrants from Libya increased to more than 14,000 people.

According to the statistics of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees and the International Organization for Migration, mass deportations from Libya increased as of November 30, 2022, as approximately 14,563 incidents were recorded to three countries or the country of origin, and the largest number of deportations was to Egypt (8171), followed by Niger (3895), Sudan (1535), and Chad (243).
