Doha: Spain has announced its accession to the Hague Group-a coalition of 34 nations led by South Africa and Colombia-aimed at imposing new economic sanctions on Israel and ending its impunity for war crimes in the Gaza Strip. The announcement was made on the sidelines of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
According to Qatar News Agency, Spain also declared its participation in the donor group responsible for funding the Palestinian Authority, alongside countries such as France and the United Kingdom. The coalition’s action plan includes a series of concrete measures, such as banning the export of dual-use or military-related equipment to Israel, prohibiting the transit of military shipments through member states’ ports, and terminating public contracts with institutions that support the Israeli occupation.
The measures also include advocating legal accountability by referring Israel to the International Court of Justice (ICJ), imposing an oil embargo, and potentially escalating additional punitive measures should Israel continue to disregard international calls for ceasefire and accountability. This move marks a significant diplomatic shift by Spain and adds pressure on Tel Aviv, as international momentum grows for tangible actions in response to the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
