Doha: Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) has launched two advanced diagnostic services for pediatric allergies, specifically designed to enhance the detection and management of allergic conditions in children. The newly introduced services include skin allergy testing and food and drug challenge tests, which are recognized as the gold standard for confirming or ruling out allergic conditions under specialist medical supervision.
According to Qatar News Agency, these services are offered through the pediatric clinics at the Ambulatory Care Center. They aim to improve early diagnosis accuracy, enhance the quality of specialized care for children, and reduce complications related to allergies. Dr. Mohammed Al Amri, Deputy Chief Executive Officer and Medical Director at Hamad General Hospital, emphasized that these initiatives reflect HMC's commitment to providing advanced diagnostic care that enhances children's health and empowers families to make informed treatment decisions.
The services employ specialized diagnostic approaches to support early diagnosis and reduce allergy-related complications, facilitating personalized treatment plans. They also offer families guidance on managing allergic conditions in children, including emergency action plans. The clinic accepts referrals from Primary Health Care Centers, HMC hospitals, and Pediatric Emergency Centers for children aged 6 months to 14 years, providing early diagnosis and specialized follow-up care through a multidisciplinary team specializing in pediatric allergy.
Skin allergy testing accurately assesses food and environmental allergies in children, identifying allergy triggers when combined with clinical evaluation and laboratory tests. This early diagnosis helps prevent life-threatening reactions such as anaphylaxis and supports families and schools with emergency management plans.
The pediatric food and drug challenge testing clinic helps reassess certain food allergy cases, allowing for the safe reintroduction of some foods into children's diets after appropriate medical evaluation. Regarding drug allergies, the clinic provides specialized testing, including penicillin allergy confirmation, highlighting the importance of re-evaluating such cases to improve antibiotic use and avoid inappropriate treatments.
Dr. Aba Mohammed Al Kaabi, Senior Consultant and Section Head of Pediatric Allergy at Hamad General Hospital, underscored the significance of early assessment of food allergy cases in promoting healthy nutrition practices. This approach not only protects children's health but also reduces the burden on families by providing official medical confirmation, thereby improving their quality of life.
