New york: HH the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani said that Syria has entered a new phase since late last year, one that he hopes will mark the beginning of a path toward fulfilling the Syrian people’s aspirations for stability, development, and the rule of law, after closing a dark chapter in the country’s history.
According to Qatar News Agency, in his address to the opening session of the 80th United Nations General Assembly held today in New York, HH the Amir emphasized that the State of Qatar has consistently stood by the Syrian people throughout the past years, as HH the Amir “continued to raise their cause from this very podium even when it seemed to have fallen off the agenda of international politics.”
HH the Amir called on the international community to seize the current opportunity to support Syria in successfully navigating this transitional period so that Syrians can enjoy a normal life after decades of suffering.
“We have learned from our experience in other Arab countries that building state institutions, fostering relationships between the state and general public on the basis of equal citizenship, while respecting religious, ethnic, and cultural diversity, are of paramount importance at this stage.”
HH the Amir added that the State of Qatar “will spare no effort in providing the necessary support to sisterly Syria,” and that HH the Amir was “confident of the Syrian people’s ability to overcome the hardships of this transitional period, renounce sectarianism in all its forms, violence, and other divisive elements, and reject foreign intervention, particularly Israeli attempts to partition Syria and act as if the areas south of Damascus were areas of Israeli influence.”
