GCC Games 2026 Commences in Doha, Highlighting Gulf Unity

Doha: GCC Games 2026 has officially commenced in Doha, with HE Sheikh Khalifa bin Khalid Al Thani, Director of the Sports Affairs Sector at the Qatar Olympic Committee and Director General of the Organizing Committee of the Games, emphasizing the event's significance beyond just a sporting occasion. He stated that the games reflect the enduring bonds among Gulf states, showcasing a shared destiny and common history that extend beyond the competitive fields.

According to Qatar News Agency, during the opening ceremony, His Excellency highlighted the historical, religious, linguistic, and social ties that bind the Gulf states. He noted that the tournament provides a framework for strengthening the Gulf's sporting presence, facilitating the exchange of expertise, and raising the level of competition among Gulf athletes. The event underscores the importance of sport in fostering Gulf cooperation and enhancing communication among athletes, federations, and Olympic committees.

His Excellency further mentioned that the tournament is a crucial opportunity to discover new talent, develop athletes' capabilities, and prepare a new generation capable of representing the Gulf states in regional, continental, and international championships. The Games in Doha will gather 1400 athletes and officials, competing across 17 sports over 11 days, reinforcing Qatar's reputation as a safe, welcoming, and world-class host nation.

The competitions will take place at Qatar's state-of-the-art sports venues, including Aspire Dome, Women's Sports Hall, Hamad Aquatic Centre, Qatar Sports Club, and Al Gharafa Sports Club, among others. These venues have a proven track record of hosting major regional and international sporting events. For example, Hamad Aquatic Centre will host the swimming competitions, having previously staged the World Aquatics Championships Doha 2024. Aspire Dome will host taekwondo, table tennis, and karate competitions, and has welcomed numerous international tournaments and world championships in the past.

The 17 sports featured at Doha 2026 include archery, athletics, 3x3 basketball, billiards, boxing, bowling, equestrian, fencing, handball, karate, padel, table tennis, taekwondo, shooting, snooker, swimming, and volleyball. Qatar's WADA-accredited anti-doping laboratory will oversee anti-doping testing throughout the Games. Doha 2026 marks the fourth edition of the GCC Games, following the previous edition held in Kuwait in 2022.
