Paris: French President Emmanuel Macron Wednesday supported a vote of confidence in the current government, stressing that it is not in a state of denial of reality or exaggeration of financial difficulties.
According to Qatar News Agency, Macron, during a cabinet meeting, expressed his full support for Prime Minister Francois Bayrou’s move to impose austerity measures that would reduce public debt, calling on parties who want to be ruling parties to take responsibility.
Analysts considered this step as a new warning period of uncertainty and puts Macron back at the forefront of the political scene, especially with the assertion of the left and far-right opposition that it will not give confidence to the government, increasing the likelihood of its fall.
The government spokesman quoted Macron as saying that Francois Bayrou is not in a state of denial of reality or exaggeration of the financial situation in the country, while parliamentary sources explained that a vote of confidence is not guaranteed even in the ranks of the government coalition, as the fifty members of the right-wing Republican Party are not unanimous at this stage on a vote of confidence.
On Tuesday, Bayrou promised to fight to prevent the fall of his government, asked the opposition to think and abandon its spontaneous reactions, urging it to choose between chaos and responsibility.
The French prime minister also requested a vote of confidence in his government from the National Assembly, where he needs parliamentary support to impose austerity measures that will reduce the public debt, saying that such a vote would consecrate the effort to reduce the public deficit in France by 44 billion euros, and without the approval of the Assembly, the move would be impossible.
Economic reports confirm that France’s debt of 114% of GDP poses a threat to the country’s financial stability.
