Doha: The Arab League has issued a stern warning regarding the ongoing escalation in the region, particularly in the Arabian Gulf, emphasizing the potential grave consequences and urging a swift return to diplomatic talks.
According to Qatar News Agency, Arab League Secretary-General Nabil Fahmy, in a statement on Sunday, called upon both the United States and Iran to take immediate actions to reduce tensions. He highlighted that further escalation could lead to significant losses for all parties involved and risk spiraling into uncontrolled mutual destruction with severe economic repercussions for the region and the global economy.
Fahmy reiterated the League's firm condemnation of Iran's attacks on several Arab countries, labeling these actions as completely unacceptable. He emphasized that Arab nations have consistently opposed the resort to war and should not be burdened with the costs of its continuation or the current dangerous escalation.
The Secretary-General urged for urgent and sincere efforts to restore calm and for both the United States and Iran to adhere to the Memorandum of Understanding signed in June. He stressed the critical importance of maintaining freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, in line with international law and Security Council Resolution 2817, cautioning against using the Strait as a tool for political pressure or economic coercion.
Fahmy underscored the need for wisdom, restraint, and a clear understanding of the consequences of further escalation. He concluded by asserting that returning to negotiations and engaging in constructive dialogue remains the only viable solution for peacefully resolving the outstanding issues.
