World Environment Day 2025 Highlights Urgent Call to Address Plastic Pollution Crisis

Doha: Under the theme ‘Beat Plastic Pollution,’ the international community will celebrate World Environment Day, annually observed on June 5. This year’s celebration coincides with plastic pollution reaching unprecedented levels that threaten both ecosystems and human health alike.

According to Qatar News Agency, the occasion aims to highlight the growing scientific evidence on the impacts of plastic pollution and to build global popular momentum to reject plastics, reduce their use, recycle them, or promote alternative ways of dealing with them, striving for a cleaner and more sustainable future. Official statistics indicate that the world produces over 400 million tons of plastic annually, nearly half of which is designated for single-use only, with less than 10% recycled. Alarmingly, approximately eleven million tons of plastic end up in lakes, rivers, and oceans every year, an amount roughly equivalent to the combined weight of 2,200 Eiffel Towers.

This year, Jeju Province in South Korea is hosting the celebrations with the ambitious goal of eliminating plastic pollution by 2040. The main events include an international conference, a global activity map, social media campaigns, beach clean-up initiatives, and an exhibition of innovative solutions.

In the State of Qatar, the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change launched a series of awareness activities on this occasion at Qatar Mall, from June 1-3. These events aimed to raise environmental awareness among various segments of society and highlight the dangers of plastic pollution and its negative impacts on terrestrial and marine ecosystems through educational and interactive activities that combine entertainment with information. These events included several awareness corners, such as ‘Land Corner’, ‘Sea Corner’, ‘Knowledge Garden’, and ‘Photography Corner’, each focusing on different aspects of plastic pollution.

The State of Qatar places great importance on the environment and is recognized as a pioneering country in combating plastic pollution. It participates in events like the International Plastic Bag Free Day, emphasizing the reduction of single-use plastic bags and promoting environmentally friendly alternatives in line with Qatar National Vision 2030.

World Environment Day 2025 is crucial as the global plastic pollution crisis worsens. Microplastics, less than 5 millimeters in diameter, infiltrate food, drink, and air, with humans ingesting over 50,000 plastic particles annually. Plastic pollution threatens biodiversity, affecting more than 800 species, and its negative impact extends globally.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres emphasized that plastic pollution is choking the planet. Efforts for change include drafting a new global treaty to end plastic pollution, which harms ecosystems, well-being, and the climate. Guterres called for more effort and faster action, aligning with this year’s World Environment Day and the UN-led ‘Beat Plastic Pollution’ campaign.

Plastic bags are significant environmental pollutants, and their production threatens public health and the environment. Banning them aids in preserving wildlife and mitigating climate change, encouraging the use of reusable and paper alternatives. This year’s celebration underscores the urgency of addressing these challenges for a sustainable future.

World Environment Day was established by the UN General Assembly in 1972 and has grown into a major global platform for environmental awareness, engaging tens of millions worldwide.
