Socialist candidate Francina Armengol was elected Spanish parliaments Speaker after securing 178 votes out of 350 in the Chamber.
Today's parliament session was considered an experiment before a decisive vote on the elections that will determine who will form the next government, after inconclusive elections last month.
Armengol's election followed a last-minute agreement with the Catalan separatist Together for Catalonia party.
