Shura Council Joins International Meeting on Drug Legislation in Vienna

Vienna: The Shura Council participated in the global meeting of the International Network for Legislation on Drugs (INLOD), organized by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) at the UN Vienna International Centre. The event saw participation from parliamentarians, policymakers, and experts worldwide, focusing on enhancing international coordination and developing legislation concerning synthetic drugs.

According to Qatar News Agency, the Shura Council was represented by members Essa bin Arar Al Romaihi and Ahmed bin Sultan Al Aseeri. The meeting tackled emerging challenges associated with synthetic drugs and discussed strategies to develop legislative responses at national, regional, and international levels. It also reviewed the experiences of various parliaments in enacting relevant legislation.

Discussions included exchanging best practices to strengthen early warning systems and develop legal frameworks. The meeting aimed to balance punitive measures with health interventions and explored ways to empower parliaments in supporting prevention and treatment. Cooperation in combating illicit trafficking and money laundering linked to drug crimes was also a key focus.
