Russia Foils Terrorist Plot to Assassinate Military Officer

Doha: Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) said Tuesday it had thwarted a “terrorist” plot in the Moscow region aimed at assassinating a senior Russian military officer using a car packed with more than 60 kilograms of explosives.

According to Qatar News Agency, the FSB detained a suspect alleged to be an agent of the Ukrainian special services. The individual reportedly manufactured a homemade explosive device on instructions from the plot’s organizer and hid it inside a car purchased with funds supplied by the enemy.

The FSB said the vehicle was to be parked at a location designated by the planners and detonated as the targeted senior officer from the Russian Ministry of Defense passed by.

The Investigative Department of the FSB in the Rostov Region has opened criminal cases against the suspect, including charges of high treason, illegal manufacture and transportation of explosives, and other related offenses.
