Doha: HE Permanent Observer for the League of Arab States (LAS) to the United Nations Majid Abdel Fattah emphasized Qatar’s pivotal role in championing Arab causes, particularly the Palestinian issue. He highlighted Qatar’s active engagement within the international organization, underscoring its commitment to promoting security, stability, and just peace.
According to Qatar News Agency, His Excellency noted in an exclusive interview that the collaboration between Qatar and the League of Arab States at the United Nations is at its best, with Qatari initiatives playing a crucial role in unifying and representing the Arab position globally. Qatar is set to host the Second World Summit for Social Development from November 4-6, focusing on inclusive social development and accelerating progress toward the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
His Excellency pointed out that Qatar led negotiations for the UN’s 65th Anniversary Declaration, resulting in the resolution to convene the Summit of the Future, highlighting Qatar’s high diplomatic standing. He added that the 80th session of the UN General Assembly, amid complex geopolitical conditions, places issues like the Palestinian cause at the forefront of the global agenda, receiving significant attention during various meetings, including the Second Conference on the Two-State Solution and Arab ministerial meetings.
He highlighted Qatar’s pivotal role in ensuring a unified Arab position and achieving shared objectives. The UN session also addresses global issues such as the Ukraine crisis and Security Council reform, with Qatar and Arab countries striving to present a unified vision and initiatives enhancing regional influence in international policy, particularly in sustainable development and climate change.
His Excellency affirmed Qatar’s cooperation with the Arab League on diplomatic action for Arab issues, including supporting the Palestinian cause and preventing Israeli aggression. This cooperation is evident in Qatar’s active positions in meetings and committees globally. He also mentioned the recent Israeli attack on Qatar, met with widespread international condemnation, reflecting respect for Qatar’s sovereignty and its role in mediation.
He acknowledged that while UN General Assembly resolutions are non-binding, Qatar plays a crucial role in coordinating Arab efforts and intensifying diplomatic pressure to overcome obstacles. He concluded by noting the growing recognition of the State of Palestine by countries like the UK, Canada, and Australia as a significant step, reflecting global support for Palestinian rights and adding diplomatic pressure on opposing states to advance Palestine’s bid for full UN membership.
