Doha: Al-Raya newspaper editorial celebrated the Qatari national team’s qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, set to be held in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The editorial highlighted the achievement as a significant milestone in Qatar’s sporting history, attributing it to the comprehensive sports vision championed by HH the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani. This vision has integrated sports into the country’s sustainable development framework and Qatar National Vision 2030, reinforcing Qatar’s reputation as a global sports hub.
According to Qatar News Agency, Al-Raya emphasized that this qualification is not merely a football triumph but a testament to Qatar’s strategic planning and national vision. It positions Qatar as a leading center for sports excellence and major tournament organization. The Peninsula newspaper echoed these sentiments, noting that Qatar’s journey to qualification was challenging, marked by frequent coaching changes and inconsistent performances. However, under the leadership of Julen Lopetegui, the team found its stride and secured a crucial victory against the UAE, showcasing determination and purpose.
The Peninsula also pointed out that while qualifying for the World Cup is a significant achievement, the expanded tournament format will present new challenges. Nonetheless, Qatar’s participation marks a transition from hosting global football events to actively competing in them.
Meanwhile, Al-Sharq newspaper commended Qatar’s diplomatic initiatives, highlighting its role in facilitating dialogue and peace. The editorial focused on Qatar’s successful mediation in advancing peace talks in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The newspaper reported that Doha hosted the signing of a mechanism to oversee the ceasefire between the Congolese government and the March 23 Movement, in accordance with the Doha Declaration of Principles.
