Doha: Qatari newspapers emphasized key topics in their Sunday editorials, particularly focusing on Qatar’s role in hosting peace talks between Pakistan and Afghanistan. The editorials underscore Qatar’s position as a global mediating power, contributing to regional and international stability through its long-term peacebuilding strategy.
According to Qatar News Agency, the newspapers also discussed the final statement from the 6th Session of the Islamic Conference of Labour Ministers, which supported Palestine’s quest for full membership in international bodies, including the International Labour Organization. The statement emphasized the importance of securing decent work and economic opportunities for Palestinians.
Furthermore, newspapers expressed concern over the dire situation in the Gaza Strip, where Palestinians face severe food shortages amid destruction, with uncounted bodies among the deceased and missing.
Al-Arab newspaper highlighted Qatar’s successful mediation efforts, noting that Doha’s hosting of peace talks between Islamabad and Kabul is part of its ongoing international and regional mediation efforts, which began in 2004. Qatar’s neutrality has established it as a trusted partner in resolving global conflicts, including its role in the Russian-Ukrainian war, where it facilitated the reunion of 14 children with their families in July.
The editorial concluded that Qatar’s success in mediation is anchored in its foreign policy, focusing on mediation as a tool for survival and economic growth. Positive outcomes are anticipated from the Pakistan-Afghanistan talks, with expectations of a permanent cessation of violence due to a focus on counterterrorism and border security.
Al-Sharq newspaper echoed this sentiment, highlighting Qatar’s pivotal role as a trusted mediator amid escalating border tensions and recent clashes between Pakistan and Afghanistan. The newspaper noted Doha’s history of successful mediations, including hosting Afghan peace talks and facilitating the Doha Agreement in 2020 between the US and the Taliban.
Al-Sharq emphasized that successful mediations extend beyond ceasefires, potentially paving the way for broader political solutions and long-term stability. The ongoing talks underscore Doha’s commitment to dialogue as the sole resolution method for disputes, reinforcing its active role in regional and international affairs.
