Jeddah: The State of Qatar participated in an extraordinary meeting of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to discuss developments in Somalia, held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. HE Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Sultan bin Saad Al Muraikhi led Qatar's delegation at the meeting.
According to Qatar News Agency, HE Al Muraikhi emphasized the importance of the meeting given the rapid developments in Somalia, urging OIC member states to uphold collective responsibility in defending sovereignty, international law, and regional stability. He condemned Israel's recognition of the "Somaliland" region as independent, stating it violates international law and undermines Somalia's sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Al Muraikhi reiterated Qatar's unwavering support for Somalia's sovereignty and its rejection of any attempts to compromise this. He asserted that "Somaliland" is part of Somalia and any recognition of its secession is null under international law. This stance aligns with the outcomes of the 15th Islamic Summit, which supported Somalia's sovereignty.
He further affirmed Qatar's commitment to supporting Somalia's legitimate institutions, security, and stability, and highlighted Qatar's developmental support in areas like health, education, and economic empowerment. HE Al Muraikhi stressed the importance of global efforts to maintain stability in the Horn of Africa.
The minister highlighted that Israel's recognition of Somaliland is part of a wider pattern of actions violating Palestinian rights. He warned of potential serious consequences for regional and global security and reiterated Qatar's support for the Palestinian cause, advocating for a two-state solution based on 1967 borders.
