Geneva: The State of Qatar has reiterated its commitment to being an active international partner, emphasizing its success in fostering international consensus on important issues through mediation efforts and hosting meetings under the United Nations’ auspices. These gatherings have included special envoys on Afghanistan and expert working groups focused on priority areas identified by the independent assessment on Afghanistan.
According to Qatar News Agency, this commitment was conveyed in a statement by Jawhara bint Abdulaziz Al Suwaidi, Deputy Permanent Representative of the Permanent Delegation of the State of Qatar to the UN Office in Geneva. She delivered the statement during an enhanced interactive dialogue on Afghanistan as part of the 60th session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva. Al Suwaidi highlighted the numerous challenges Afghanistan faces, such as the economic crisis, unemployment, worsening humanitarian needs, climate disturbances, poverty, food insecurity, sanctions, frozen state assets, and the return of millions of Afghan refugees.
She underscored the necessity for the international community to support rebuilding Afghan institutions, ensuring access to humanitarian aid, and maintaining dialogue with all Afghan parties. Al Suwaidi stated that such efforts are vital for creating conditions for peace in Afghanistan, reintegrating it into the international community, and meeting its international obligations.
Moreover, Al Suwaidi noted that Qatar continues to provide humanitarian and development support to Afghanistan. Recently, Qatar sent five planes carrying 100 tons of humanitarian aid as part of an airlift to help the Afghan people after an earthquake struck the eastern part of the country.
The Deputy Permanent Representative emphasized Qatar’s dedication to discussing human rights issues with Afghan parties, particularly focusing on women’s participation, their right to education and work, and the protection of rights for all Afghan people.
