Qatar Highlights Importance of Women’s Role in Peace and Security Efforts

New york: The State of Qatar reaffirmed the importance of enhancing women's participation in peace and security efforts, emphasizing that women are a fundamental pillar in achieving sustainable peace and building more stable and prosperous societies. This statement was delivered by HE Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the United Nations, Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani, during the open debate of the United Nations Security Council on Women, Peace, and Security.

According to Qatar News Agency, Sheikha Alya noted that ongoing wars and conflicts have significant repercussions for women and girls, who are among the groups most affected by crises. She stressed the necessity of concerted international efforts to strengthen the role and status of women as key partners in achieving peace and security. The international community, she stated, cannot overlook the catastrophic humanitarian conditions faced by women in conflict zones, including in the occupied Palestinian territories, due to violations committed under the Israeli occupation.

Sheikha Alya referred to the latest report from the Secretary-General of the United Nations on Women, Peace, and Security, highlighting that grave violations against women and girls in crisis-affected environments, such as the occupied Palestinian territories, exemplify the serious dangers faced by women. Recent developments in the Gulf region have underscored the importance of preserving regional security and stability, impacting communities, including women and girls.

Qatar's commitment to regional security and stability was reiterated, with a focus on dialogue, diplomacy, upholding international law, and resolving disputes through peaceful means. This approach aims to foster a safer environment that supports development and empowers women and girls. Qatar has welcomed the agreement on a memorandum of understanding between the United States and Iran as an important step toward sustainable peace and economic growth.

Sheikha Alya expressed appreciation for the willingness of both sides to address differences through dialogue and peaceful means. She commended the efforts of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan and other parties in reducing tensions and facilitating agreements. Qatar's dedication to the Women, Peace, and Security agenda is evident in its initiatives and diplomatic efforts in mediation, aimed at creating broader opportunities for women's participation in dialogue and decision-making.

Qatar has joined the campaign launched by the Secretary-General of the United Nations, titled "Common Pledge for Women's Full, Equal and Meaningful Participation in Peace Processes," and is an active member of the Arab Women Mediators Network. Qatar is set to host the third meeting of the Working Group on Women, Peace, and Security for the Arab States in January 2025, emphasizing regional cooperation in supporting women's roles in peace and security efforts.
