Qatar Highlights Commitment to Sustainable Urban Development at 13th World Urban Forum

Baku: The State of Qatar participated in the 13th World Urban Forum (WUF13) in Baku, Azerbaijan, where discussions focused on the theme "Housing the world: Safe and resilient cities and communities." The forum, which is organized by the United Nations Human Settlements Program (UN-Habitat), runs until May 22 and brings together officials, decision-makers, and experts in urban development and housing from around the world.

According to Qatar News Agency, the Qatari delegation was led by HE Minister of Municipality Abdullah bin Hamad bin Abdullah Al Attiyah. His Excellency attended the forum's opening ceremony alongside HE President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and other senior officials. During the ministerial meeting, discussions centered on sustainable urban expansion, housing policies, and the role of digital transformation in urban planning.

In his address, Minister Al Attiyah emphasized Qatar's commitment to sustainable urban development as part of its National Vision 2030. He outlined the nation's integrated planning approach, which combines urban development with modern transport networks and environmental sustainability, enhancing life quality and resource efficiency.

Minister Al Attiyah underscored the strategic necessity of building sustainable cities to address future challenges like climate change and economic and technological shifts. He highlighted the Doha Metro network's role in supporting balanced urban development and reducing emissions. Additionally, he showcased Qatar's urban projects, such as Lusail City and Msheireb Downtown Doha, as examples of sustainable and innovative urban communities.

The Minister noted the importance of digital transformation in modern city development, citing technologies like geographic information systems, digital twins, and artificial intelligence as tools for efficient urban planning and informed decision-making.

Concluding his speech, Minister Al Attiyah acknowledged the WUF's role as a global platform for cooperation and knowledge exchange, contributing to a sustainable urban future. The forum underscores Qatar's dedication to international efforts in creating efficient and sustainable cities.
