Doha: Financial experts have expressed optimism about the launch of the Qatar Diamond Exchange (QDE), highlighting its potential to diversify Qatar's economy, enhance investment flows, and solidify the country's standing in the global diamond and precious stones trading arena. According to Qatar News Agency, the Qatar Free Zones Authority (QFZ) recently announced the debut of the QDE, a comprehensive trading platform for rough and polished diamonds and precious stones, located in the Ras Bufontas Free Zone.
The QDE integrates trading, membership, vaulting, certification, and industry services within a singular, regulated framework. This initiative is in alignment with Qatar National Vision 2030 and is anticipated to serve as a new gateway for global diamond trade, contributing to the nation's economic diversification efforts. The facility boasts a secure trading floor, private negotiation suites, a state-of-the-art vault, and on-site certification services, all designed to offer a safe and efficient environment for trade.
The exchange is set to connect diamond producers from Africa and Asia with buyers in Europe and the Gulf through a series of coordinated events, including tenders for both rough and polished diamonds. In discussing the significance of this development, financial expert Ahmed Aqel outlined that the QDE represents a pivotal strategic move towards expanding Doha's role as a major hub for diamond and gemstone trading.
Aqel emphasized that the exchange will not only diversify income sources but also reduce Qatar's dependency on oil and gas, aligning with the objectives of Qatar National Vision 2030. He noted that the regulated ecosystem established by QDE will enhance Qatar's involvement in the global diamond value chain and ensure the legitimacy and transparency of transactions through robust regulatory frameworks.
He also highlighted the potential for significant investment opportunities in the sector, given the Arabian Gulf's longstanding tradition of gemstone and diamond trading. The QDE is expected to foster partnerships between local companies and international entities, facilitating the transfer of global expertise to the Qatari market and opening new avenues for financial services and operational activities.
In agreement, financial analyst Youssef Abu Haliqa described the establishment of the QDE as a strategic milestone in bolstering economic diversification and positioning Qatar as a leading regional and global gemstone trading hub. He underscored the importance of modern legislation in regulating the sector to enhance market efficiency and competitiveness on a global scale.
Qatar's commitment to transparency in diamond trading is further evidenced by its membership in the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme (KPCS) since 2021, which ensures the legitimacy of rough diamond trading through government-issued certificates of origin.
