Doha: The State of Qatar and the Republic of Turkiye are deepening their strategic partnership as HE President of the Republic of Turkiye Recep Tayyip Erdogan embarks on an official visit to Qatar. This visit aims to bolster the already strong historical ties and strategic cooperation between the two nations.

According to Qatar News Agency, the visit includes a pivotal meeting between HH the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani and HE President Erdogan at the Amiri Diwan. The leaders are set to discuss various political, economic, and investment opportunities, as well as significant regional and international issues of mutual concern. This visit is of particular importance given the current challenges in the Arab region, reflecting both countries’ commitment to strengthening bilateral relations for the benefit of their peoples.

During this visit, the leaders will co-chair the 11th session of the Qatari-Turkish Supreme Strategic Committee, a crucial bilateral mechanism established in 2014. Over 110 agreements and memoranda of understanding have been signed since its inception, facilitating cooperation in numerous sectors. The committee’s meetings have been instrumental in advancing bilateral relations and strategic coordination, supported by the leadership of both nations.

The 10th session of the committee was held in Ankara in November, where outcomes demonstrated a shared political will to enhance cooperation across all fields. The session reflected strong historical ties and mutual understanding, emphasizing the desire to deepen the partnership.

Trade, finance, investment, and energy sectors are key areas of focus, with both sides aiming to reach a trade volume of USD 5 billion. This includes exploring new opportunities to expand economic relations and enhance cooperation through public-private partnerships and institutional exchanges.

The first meeting of the Qatar-Turkiye Joint Economic and Trade Commission (JETCO) is scheduled in Istanbul for February 8, 2024. This meeting is set to implement the Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement, further reinforcing trade and investment relations.

Qatar and Turkiye have shared a strategic relationship since 1973, celebrating 50 years of ties in 2023. Their relationship extends beyond commerce and investment, aligning on numerous regional and international political issues. Mutual visits and multiple committees in various sectors highlight the robust interstate relations.

Turkiye is a significant investment destination for Qatar, with the Qatar Investment Authority managing large projects there. Meanwhile, Turkish companies operate in Qatari markets across various sectors. The Qatari private sector has notably expanded in Turkish investment fields, including real estate, tourism, manufacturing, and technology.

Cultural cooperation is also prominent, with initiatives like the Yunus Emre Turkish Cultural Center in Doha and agreements for cultural exchanges. The first Turkish school in Qatar opened in 2016, and there is ongoing collaboration in education, scholarships, and study missions.

The strategic partnership between Qatar and Turkiye continues to evolve, driven by shared goals and mutual respect, highlighting the strong ties and commitment to fostering cooperation across all sectors.
