Geneva: The State of Qatar emphasized the need to consolidate national unity, build institutions, and advance a comprehensive political process in Syria, highlighting the significance of Syrian-led initiatives involving all segments of the Syrian populace. This statement was delivered by Abdullah bin Ali Bahzad, Second Secretary at Qatar’s Permanent Mission to Geneva, during the Item 4 General Debate at the 60th session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva.
According to Qatar News Agency, Bahzad underscored that Syria faces a pivotal moment in its history. After enduring 14 years of conflict and prolonged authoritarian governance, the decisions made by the state will profoundly influence stability and social peace. He noted the establishment of the Syrian National Commission for Transitional Justice and other investigative bodies as crucial steps toward acknowledging state responsibility in addressing crimes and violations, ensuring justice, and promoting accountability.
Bahzad welcomed the roadmap agreed upon by Syria, Jordan, and the United States to resolve the crisis in Sweida, enhance regional stability, and promote peace. He called for restraint from all parties to prevent actions that could exacerbate tensions and compromise these efforts.
The Second Secretary reiterated Qatar’s appeal to the international community to maintain humanitarian and development support, lift sanctions, and take necessary actions to halt Israeli aggression and end its occupation of Syrian territories.
