New york: President of the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly, Annalena Baerbock, emphasized that the world stands at a crossroads, with current times appearing bleak once again.
According to Qatar News Agency, addressing the commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the United Nations, Baerbock highlighted the dire situations in Gaza and Sudan, children without parents, searching for food amidst the rubble in Gaza, while the war in Ukraine drags on, as do the gangs terrorizing people in Haiti, unchecked hatred online, and floods and droughts across the globe. Is this the world our Charter envisioned, she questioned.
Baerbock also reflected on the founding of the UN, noting that it emerged from a time when the world yearned for hope, affirming that brave leaders came together to offer this hope through the UN Charter.
When it was signed on 26 June 1945, the Charter was more than just another political declaration, it was a promise from leaders to their peoples, and from nations to one another, that humanity had learned from its darkest chapters, she highlighted.
Baerbock further stressed that the UN Charter was not a promise of paradise for humanity, but rather a commitment to not repeat being led into the abyss by forces of hatred and unchecked ambition.
Concluding her address, Baerbock affirmed that this day was not an occasion for celebration, but rather for recalling the hard lessons of history and summoning the courage once again to find hope instead of succumbing to despair.
