Niger’s CNSP Leader Sworn In as President for Five-Year Transition Period

Niamey: Leader of Niger’s National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland (CNSP), Abdourahamane Tiani, was sworn in on Wednesday as the country’s president for a five-year transition period under a new charter replacing Niger’s constitution.

According to Qatar News Agency, during the signing ceremony of the charter, the ruling military council stated that a transition period would begin today and last for five years in order to restore constitutional governance.

In his former position as commander of the presidential guard, Tiani had led a military coup on July 26, 2023, ousting the then President Mohamed Bazoum.

The coup triggered regional and international condemnations, calling for the reinstatement of the elected president.
