Doha: HE Chairperson of the National Human Rights Committee (NHRC), Maryam bint Abdullah Al Attiyah, conducted a series of significant bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the International Conference on Artificial Intelligence and Human Rights. The event was recently held in Doha.
According to Qatar News Agency, the conference was organized by the NHRC in partnership with the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, the National Cyber Security Agency (NCSA), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), and the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI).
During one of her meetings with the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights defenders, Mary Lawlor, HE Al Attiyah affirmed the NHRC’s support for human rights defenders globally and expressed readiness to collaborate on events and consultations to enhance protection and empowerment.
In her discussion with the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Right to Privacy, Dr. Ana Brian Nougreres, HE Al Attiyah conveyed the NHRC’s focus on protecting privacy rights amidst digital progress, highlighting Qatar’s initiatives, including the establishment of the NCSA.
HE Al Attiyah also met with the United Nations Special Rapporteur on violence against women and girls, Reem Alsalem, where she emphasized the need to strengthen national legislation for women’s protection and collaborate on joint events to improve protection standards.
In a meeting with the United Nations Special Rapporteur on contemporary forms of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia, and related intolerance, Dr. Ashwini K.P., HE Al Attiyah discussed the NHRC’s initiatives to promote tolerance and coexistence, and expressed openness to global dialogue and cooperation.
HE Al Attiyah’s meeting with the Director of the National Human Rights Centre of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Prof. Akmal Saidov, focused on the exchange of expertise and joint activities, including enhancing parliamentary cooperation in human rights.
During her meeting with the Chair of the United Nations Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (CESCR), Professor Dr. Laura-Maria Craciunean-Tatu, both parties highlighted the need for collaboration in tackling global issues such as climate change and immigration.
In a discussion with the Director of the UNDP’s Regional Hub, Dr. Mary Kawar, HE Al Attiyah recognized the UNDP’s contribution to the conference’s success and expressed a desire to enhance cooperation in line with Qatar National Vision 2030.
These meetings underscore the NHRC’s dedication to fostering international cooperation and effective partnerships in addressing human rights challenges, particularly in the context of advancing artificial intelligence and technology.
