MECC and QRDI Council Unite to Address Myna Bird Invasion

Doha: The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MECC) and Qatar Research, Development and Innovation (QRDI) Council have signed an agreement to launch the "Smart Solutions for Invasive Species: The Myna Trap Challenge" project. This initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance cooperation and support measures aimed at protecting biodiversity and maintaining environmental balance in Qatar.

According to Qatar News Agency, the agreement was formalized by Khalid Joma Bojamhoor Al Muhannadi, Director of the Wildlife Development Department at MECC, and Nejoud Al Jehani, Executive Director of Strategy and Programs at QRDI Council. The signing occurred alongside the first gulf conference on wildlife, which MECC organized in collaboration with the Secretary General of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC).

The project intends to devise innovative strategies to control the proliferation of the invasive Myna bird within Qatar's ecosystem. This effort is crucial in mitigating the adverse environmental effects caused by the bird's presence and in bolstering national initiatives to safeguard biodiversity and protect indigenous species.

Khalid Joma Bojamhoor Al Muhannadi emphasized that the agreement is aligned with national programs focused on minimizing risks associated with invasive species. He highlighted MECC's dedication to adopting scientific and research-driven methodologies to enhance Qatar's environmental protection framework.

Al Muhannadi also remarked on the challenges posed by the Myna bird, which competes with native species and thrives in urban areas. This adaptability necessitates a scientific approach to manage its impact on local biodiversity.
