Lebanon Reaffirms Diplomatic Approach to Ceasefire Agreement with Israel

Doha: Lebanese President General Joseph Aoun reaffirmed Lebanon’s commitment to a diplomatic solution regarding the ceasefire agreement with Israel, stating that the Lebanese army is fully carrying out its duties in the area south of the Litani River. In televised remarks broadcast by the Lebanese Presidency, Aoun emphasized that the solution is the diplomatic option, and they do not wish to hear the word “war.”

According to Qatar News Agency, Aoun highlighted that once an agreement is reached between the two parties, it is expected that they respect their commitments. Regarding the ceasefire agreement between Lebanon and Israel, the Lebanese army is fulfilling its duties entirely in the area south of the Litani River and has completed around 80 to 85 percent of its mission there.

He further emphasized that the army is performing an exceptional task despite its limited resources, noting that he constantly seeks international support for the Lebanese military in meetings with officials from various countries. Aoun also noted that the incomplete deployment of the army along the border is due to Israel’s continued occupation of five positions which hold no strategic military value.

Aoun pointed out more than 3,000 violations of the agreement, the most recent being an Israeli airstrike on Beirut two days ago. The U.S.-brokered ceasefire agreement, which aimed to end Israel’s aggression against Lebanon, took effect on November 27, 2024.

The agreement included an initial two-month cessation of hostilities, while the United States and France, in a joint statement, pledged to lead international efforts to strengthen the Lebanese army’s capabilities and support Lebanon’s economy.
