Italy Calls on Libya to Exert Further Efforts to Combat Immigration Crisis

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has called on Libya to exert further efforts to combat trafficking in persons in anticipation of potential upsurge in immigrants arriving in Italy during summer which represents a concern for the government in Rome.

This came during her meeting with Libyan Prime Minister of the unity government Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh in Rome Thursday, where Meloni expressed her concern over the potential upsurge in the number of immigrants flowing to Italy during summer.

She pointed out that her country appreciates the efforts exerted by Tripoli, however, it is essential to intensify the efforts of combating trafficking in persons, she said.

During Libyan Prime Minister's visit to Rome, the two sides signed four agreements on various fields, including energy, security, communications, and infrastructure.

Meanwhile, Rome strives to have communication and relationship with Tripoli to reduce daily departure of boats from its lands to the Italian shores loaded with immigrants, posing a major crisis in Italy. (QNA)
