Italian Prime Minister Pledges to Work with Partners to Restore Navigation Freedom in Strait of Hormuz

Rome: Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on Thursday pledged to work with her partners to restore freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, stressing that this is a vital interest for her country and the entire European Union.

According to Qatar News Agency, Meloni emphasized in her address to the Italian Chamber of Deputies that if Iran succeeds in imposing additional fees on ships transiting the Strait, it could lead to significant economic repercussions and alter trade flows. She highlighted Italy's collaboration with a British-led coalition, comprising more than 30 countries, aimed at establishing the necessary security conditions to fully restore freedom of navigation and supplies in the region.

Meloni condemned all breaches of the ceasefire agreement between the United States and Iran, which has been in place for two weeks, asserting that the world now faces "a fragile horizon for peace that must be pursued with determination and resolve."

In her address, she also urged the Israeli occupation to cease its military activities in Lebanon, underlining the necessity of achieving a comprehensive ceasefire in the Middle East.

Regarding internal matters, the Italian Prime Minister dismissed the possibility of a major cabinet reshuffle and vowed to stay in office until the end of her term, set to last until the latter half of next year.

This speech marked Meloni's first address to Parliament following her significant defeat in a referendum on judicial reforms held two weeks earlier, which resulted in the resignation of several members of her government.
