Doha: Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani stated that Italy aims to assume a leading role in bolstering European defense. Speaking to the Italian Chamber of Deputies, Tajani emphasized Italy's strategic intent driven by its geographical position, industrial expertise, and dedication to peace and security in strategic regions crucial to Rome, including Sub-Saharan Africa, the Horn of Africa, the Balkans, Lebanon, and the Red Sea.
According to Qatar News Agency, Tajani highlighted Italy's intention to reaffirm its commitment to defense spending during the forthcoming NATO Summit set to take place in Ankara. He described this commitment as both courageous and necessary to safeguard the freedom and security of Italian citizens.
The 2026 NATO Summit in Ankara is scheduled to occur from July 7 to 8.
