New york: HH the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani attended the opening session of the 80th United Nations General Assembly at the UN headquarters, where he addressed a gathering of global leaders and representatives from various organizations.
According to Qatar News Agency, the session saw participation from numerous heads of state, government leaders, and delegates. In his speech, HH the Amir emphasized the foundational principles of the United Nations, which were established post-World War II to maintain peace, respect sovereignty, and promote international cooperation. He highlighted the dangers of political realism that prioritizes power over justice, cautioning against the erosion of international order.
Sheikh Tamim condemned a recent attack in Doha targeting a Hamas delegation, calling it state terrorism. He refuted claims by the Israeli Prime Minister that the attack was justified, asserting it was an assault on a peace-making state. Qatar has been instrumental in mediating between Hamas and Israel, successfully securing the release of hostages with help from Egypt and the USA. Despite setbacks, Qatar remains committed to achieving a lasting ceasefire and ensuring humanitarian aid access.
The Amir criticized Israel’s actions, accusing its leadership of seeking to expand settlements and disrupt regional peace. He expressed appreciation for global solidarity with Qatar and urged the international community to uphold the two-state solution for Palestine, emphasizing the need for peace based on international resolutions.
Addressing regional stability, Sheikh Tamim noted positive developments in Syria and Lebanon, pledging Qatar’s support for their progress towards stability and rule of law. He reiterated Qatar’s commitment to assisting Sudan in achieving sustainable peace amid its ongoing crisis.
Highlighting Qatar’s role as a global hub for dialogue, HH the Amir announced the hosting of the Second World Summit for Social Development in 2025 and Qatar’s bid for the 2036 Olympic Games, underscoring the country’s dedication to fostering global cooperation through sports and dialogue.
In closing, the Amir reaffirmed Qatar’s commitment to promoting truth, peace, and justice on the international stage, thanking the audience for their attention.
