EU Affirms Readiness to Support Tunisia with IMF Negotiations

Prime Minister of Tunisia Najla Bouden met European Commissioner for Economy Paolo Gentiloni, who is currently visiting Tunisia.

During the meeting, Gentiloni affirmed the EU’s readiness to support Tunisia in its negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), stressing that the successful completion of the programme with the IMF would pave the way for European financial and economic support for Tunisia.

The European Commissioner for Economy also stressed that providing solutions to the problem of migration can only be a collective action by all EU countries.

Tunisia is seeking a $1.9 billion loan from the IMF, but negotiations between the two sides are still stalled.

The IIMF requires the provision of real guarantees for the implementation of reforms undertaken by the Tunisian government, which mainly include the subsidy system, wage block, and troubled public institutions. At the same time, Italy and France are pressing for a rapid response from the EU institutions and providing the necessary support to Tunisia.
