Doha Set to Host International Conference on Artificial Intelligence and Human Rights

Doha: As part of its ongoing commitment to employing technology in service of humanity and supporting the ethical use of emerging technologies, the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT) is partnering in organizing the international conference ‘Artificial Intelligence and Human Rights: Opportunities, Risks, and Visions for a Better Future.’ During the conference, the Ministry will highlight national efforts to establish regulatory and ethical frameworks for the use of AI, ensuring optimal benefits while mitigating potential risks to human rights.

According to Qatar News Agency, these efforts include a set of policies and legislation introduced by the Ministry to enhance transparency and accountability in the development and deployment of AI systems, particularly with regard to safeguarding individual privacy, ensuring fairness, and promoting inclusivity in the digital space. MCIT participation will also feature key activities that highlight leading national initiatives to strengthen digital governance. At the forefront is the set of ethical principles and guidelines for the development and use of AI, recently issued by the Ministry as part of its commitment to fostering a safe digital environment that respects the cultural and human values of Qatari society.

The National Artificial Intelligence Strategy for Qatar’s sixth pillar focuses on ethics and public policy, recognizing that the increasing integration of AI into personal and professional life raises numerous ethical and public policy questions. It also emphasizes the need for mechanisms that ensure outcomes align with societal standards. The conference is expected to conclude with several recommendations, including a call to work toward issuing the Doha Declaration on Artificial Intelligence and Human Rights, raising awareness about AI implications for human rights, and developing a set of best practices and guiding principles for the responsible development and use of AI.

Additional recommendations will likely include policy suggestions for regulating AI in a manner consistent with human rights standards, as well as promoting cooperation among various stakeholders to ensure the development of ethical AI. A post-conference report summarizing the discussions, insights, and proposed actions will also be published. The conference will also feature an exhibition showcasing the transformative impact of AI on humanity’s future, with a special focus on its effects on global challenges, society, and industries.

The exhibition will explore themes such as ethical governance, human rights, and AI-driven innovation through real-world applications and visionary concepts. Visitors will be able to view demonstrations of AI technologies across sectors, including healthcare, education, sustainability, and creative arts. They will also engage in thought-provoking discussions around accountability, inclusivity, and justice. The exhibition aims to forge dialogue, foster collaboration, and inspire actionable insights by integrating technology with human rights values.
