Seoul, The Council of Presidents of the United Nations General Assembly concluded its annual meeting in Seoul, with the participation of HE the President of the 66th Session of the United Nations General Assembly and the former High Representative for the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations Nasser bin Abdulaziz Al Nasr.
The three-day meeting was chaired by President of the 56th session of the General Assembly Ambassador Dr. Han Seung-soo, and attended by HE President of the current 78th session of the UN General Assembly Dennis Francis, and 11 former presidents of the General Assembly.
The Seoul Declaration issued at the conclusion of the meeting called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza for humanitarian reasons and immediate delivery of humanitarian aid to the civilian population, stressing the importance of water, food, medicine, and basic supplies in saving the lives of civilians trapped in Gaza.
The declaration added that the ceasefire should create a political space for a permanent settlement of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict on the basis of a two-state solution living side by side in peace and security, noting that the ceasefire aims to save lives, prevent further escalation, and open ways for a permanent settlement of the conflict.
The Council expressed its full support for the priorities of the current President of the UN General Assembly, and also expressed its support for the negotiation processes launched by the General Assembly and its President with the aim of reaching a multilateral consensus on major global issues in the areas of peace, security, development, human rights, humanitarian affairs, climate change and other relevant fields.
It also expressed deep concern about the increasing number of armed conflicts around the world, the growing geopolitical division, and the world's drift toward confrontations between blocs.
It warned that the transition to sustainable development, to which the UN member states recently renewed their commitment, cannot be achieved through armed confrontations, expressing concern about the war in Ukraine and the conflict in the Middle East.
In its declaration, the Council of Presidents of the UN General Assembly stressed firm conviction that the future global order must be based on the basic principles of the UN Charter and built on respect for international law.
