At the conclusion of its annual meeting in the Korean capital, Seoul, the Council of Presidents of the UN General Assembly welcomed the establishment of the UN General Assembly President friend group at the ambassadorial level in New York, in order to offer advice to the president, strengthening the office of the president and revitalizing the role of the General Assembly.
Commenting on the meeting, HE the President of the 66th Session of the United Nations General Assembly and the former High Representative for the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations Nasser bin Abdulaziz Al Nasr told Qatar News Agency that the Council meeting touched on multiple international issues, including the conflict in the Middle East, the current war on Gaza, the war in Ukraine, and climate change among other global community priorities.
He added that HE President of the Republic of Korea Yoon Suk Yeol as well as a number of senior Korean officials met the council members, discussing the topics on the agenda of the Council of Presidents of the UN General Assembly, in addition to other pressing global issues.
HE Nasser bin Abdulaziz Al Nasr said that the idea to establish this Council began during his presidency of the 66th session of the United Nations General Assembly, following a proposal submitted by several countries, aiming to strengthen and revitalize the role and authority of the UN General Assembly, being the UN's main body that grants all member states equal representation, enabling them to a major role in taking the necessary measures to enhance international peace and security.
HE the President of the 66th Session of the United Nations General Assembly and the former High Representative for the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations highlighted that the Council includes former UN General Assembly presidents, which strengthens and revitalizes the General Assembly thanks to their expertise and experience in political work both in their countries and during their presidency of this Council.
HE Nasser bin Abdulaziz Al Nasr pointed out that the Council of Presidents of the UN General Assembly will spare no effort to accomplish the goals for which it was established, including advancing efforts to reform the UN in order to confront the current challenges that are threatening world peace and security. He added that the five permanent members of the Security Council's monopoly on veto power has deepened and prolonged many crises, something that emphasizes the importance of working hard to reform the United Nations and its working mechanisms.
His Excellency said that the State of Qatar has been repeatedly affirming the need for fair representation in the UN Security Council for member states to be fully invested in the United Nations, enabling the organization to achieve its goals and enhance its role in preventing wars and conflicts consuming the world.
HE the President of the 66th Session of the United Nations General Assembly and the former High Representative for the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations Nasser bin Abdulaziz Al Nasr said at the end of his statement to QNA that reforming the United Nations was one of the issues that he learned about during his presidency of the General Assembly, with the issue still being raised strongly today in light of the conflicts and wars that are claiming thousands of lives, warning that the world will head into the abyss if this reform is not achieved, something that peace-loving countries must aspire to.
