Madrid: Atletico Madrid inflicted Real Madrid’s first loss of the season in a high-scoring clash, winning 5-2 in a marquee matchup from the seventh round of Spain’s La Liga.
According to Qatar News Agency, Atletico’s goals came from Robin Le Normand in the 14th minute, Alexander Sorloth in first-half stoppage time (45+3), two from Julian Alvarez – a penalty in the 51st minute and another in the 63rd – and a final strike from Antoine Griezmann deep into added time (90+3). Real Madrid’s goals were scored by Kylian Mbappe in the 25th minute and Arda Guler in the 36th.
The win lifts Atletico to 12 points, placing them fourth in the standings. Real Madrid remains atop the table with 18 points, despite the setback. The defeat marks Real Madrid’s first of the campaign, having won all six of its previous matches.
Later today, Villarreal faces Athletic Bilbao. Sunday’s fixtures will see Rayo Vallecano take on Sevilla, Elche meet Celta Vigo, Real Betis host Osasuna, and Barcelona face Real Sociedad. Barcelona, the reigning champion, will look to capitalize on Real Madrid’s stumble. The Catalan club sits second with 16 points – just two behind the leader – and a win would see them take the top spot.
