Secretary-General of the League of Arab States Ahmed Aboul Gheit warned Thursday of the serious impact of the conflict in Sudan on food security in this country, and in the Arab world as a whole.
Aboul Gheit affirmed, during his meeting with the Director General of the Arab Organization for Agricultural Development (AOAD) Ibrahim El Dukhiri that these dangerous situations call for rapid Arab and international action, explaining that the fighting in Sudan led to the disruption of agricultural projects, the suspension of the transport of goods, the damage of large quantities of them, and the increase in their prices.
He gave directions of forming a committee of the membership of the AOAD, the concerned sectors of the General Secretariat, the Sudanese delegation to the Arab League, and the relevant Arab and international bodies, in implementation of the decisions of the Arab summit regarding the files of Sudan and Arab food security.
In mid-April, Sudan witnessed the outbreak of conflict between the army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The conflict caused thousands of deaths and injuries among civilians, in addition to tens of thousands of people leaving their homes due to the fighting.
