According to Qatar News Agency, Taiwan lies near the meeting point of two tectonic plates in the Pacific Ocean, making it prone to regular earthquakes. The deadliest earthquake to hit Taiwan occurred in 1999, when a 7.6-magnitude quake killed more than 2,000 people.
