6.0-Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Eastern Russia

Doha: An earthquake measuring 6 on the Richter scale struck east of the city of Severo-Kurilsk in the Kuril Islands region of eastern Russia.

According to Qatar News Agency, the US Geological Survey reported that the earthquake’s epicenter was at a depth of 53.4 km, 98 km from the city of Severo-Kurilsk.

Earthquakes regularly strike various parts of the regions along the Pacific Belt, including the Kuril Islands, which are known for frequent volcanic and seismic activity.

These islands contain about 100 volcanoes, 39 of which are active, as well as sources and lakes of hot mineral water. In addition, there are more than 60 underwater volcanoes hidden beneath the surface.
