5.6-Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Off Myanmar

Doha: A 5.6-magnitude earthquake struck the southern coast of Myanmar on Sunday, raising concerns among residents, especially in areas still recovering from the devastating earthquake that recently struck the country. The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre reported that the earthquake occurred at a depth of 35 km, noting that there were no reports of casualties or significant material damage so far.

According to Qatar News Agency, this earthquake comes at a critical time, as rescue and reconstruction efforts continue in states such as Mandalay and Sagaing, amid significant challenges facing relief teams, particularly due to monsoon rains that are hampering rescue operations and aid delivery. Humanitarian organizations have confirmed that the situation in the affected areas remains critical, with thousands of displaced people still suffering from severe food and shelter shortages.

Late last March, Myanmar experienced a devastating earthquake measuring 6.9 on the Richter scale. The earthquake struck central and northern regions of the country, including Mandalay and Sagaing states, resulting in dozens of deaths and injuries, as well as widespread destruction of infrastructure and property.
