4.6-Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Chile’s Ollague Region

Doha: An earthquake measuring 4.6 on the Richter scale struck Chile on Sunday, with its epicenter located 43 km from the village of Ollague, at a depth of 122.7 km.

According to Qatar News Agency, the US Geological Survey (USGS) provided details on the earthquake, highlighting its precise location and depth. The seismic activity serves as a reminder of Chile’s vulnerability to such natural events.

Chile is situated on the “Ring of Fire,” an area renowned for its frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions due to numerous fault lines encircling the Pacific Ocean basin. The country’s seismic history includes the catastrophic 8.8-magnitude earthquake in 2010, which, along with a subsequent tsunami, resulted in the deaths of approximately 500 people.
