2026 FIFA World Cup: Mexico Advance to Round of 16 with 2-0 Victory over Ecuador

Doha: Mexico booked their place in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a 2-0 victory over Ecuador in their Round of 32 clash at Azteca Stadium in Mexico City.

According to Qatar News Agency, the match kicked off nearly an hour late due to adverse weather conditions, but the hosts took control with first-half goals from Julian Quinones in the 22nd minute and Raul Jimenez nine minutes later.

Ecuador pushed for a way back after the break, but Mexico's disciplined defense and a series of fine saves from goalkeeper Raul Rangel preserved the clean sheet. The hosts also came close to extending their lead, with Cesar Montes seeing a powerful header brilliantly saved by Ecuador goalkeeper Hern¡n Galindez.

Ecuador's hopes of mounting a late comeback were effectively ended in stoppage time when defender Piero Hincapie was sent off, forcing his side to finish the match with 10 men.

Mexico will face the winner of the Round of 32 clash between the England national football team and the DR Congo national football team in the Round of 16 next Monday.
