Doha, Hosts Qatar got off the mark with a 2-1 win over Indonesia in Beach Volleyball 4×4 tournament at the ANOC World Beach Games.
The first two sets were scrappy, but the visitors took their foot off the gas in the third and Qatar, featuring Olympian Cherif Younousse, pulled away to win 16-21, 21-14, 15-7.
Team Qatar were pooled in Group (A) alongside USA, Germany and Indonesia while Group (B) includes Poland, Chile, Australia and Mozambique.
On the other hand, Qatar’s Sultan Khalfan and Mubarka Al Naimi suffered a straight set defeat at the hands of Japan’s Naoaki Yamamoto and Erina Otsuka in beach tennis mixed doubles event.
Basketball event will begin at Katara on Sunday where Team Qatar will go up against Cote d’Ivoire in their first match of Group C by 5:30pm before facing Togo by 8:50pm same day.
Team Qatar’s 3X3 basketball men’s team are not only targeting a podium finish at the inaugural ANOC World Beach Games Qatar 2019 but a repeat of their 2014 exploits, where they took the world by storm to claim an historic win at the FIBA 3×3 World Championships in Moscow, Rashid Al Abdulla, the team manager, has said.
