Doha, Khalid Al Zamat, Director of Services Department at the IAAF World Athletics Championship Doha 2019 stressed that Doha is ready to welcome the world of athletics and stage the biggest sporting event in the nation and region’s history.
Al Zamat also hailed the huge efforts made by the local organizing committee under the leadership of HE Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani and his deputy HE Dahlan Al-Hamad to host the event to be held at Khalifa International Stadium from September 27 to October 06, 2019 reaffirming that the championships will send a message that the state of Qatar is able to host the major sporting events.
In the following lines, Khalid Al Zamat focused lights on the plans of services department and its vital contribution to the success of the event.
How have your preparations gone in the build up to the championships to be staged in Qatar?
I would like first of all to express my sincere thanks and appreciation to HE Sheikh Joaan Bin Hamad Al Thani, President of the Qatar Olympic Committee and Chairman of the Event’s Higher Organization Committee for his full support to Qatari young men. I want also to confirm that Doha is ready to host an exceptional and unprecedented edition of the world athletics championships.
The figures and statistics indicate that Qatar 2019 will be the biggest sporting event in our history, will this be an organizational and logistical pressure on you?
We have accepted the challenge so early as Qatar and its young men have acquired the required experience to host this event thanks to the great number of events we have organized over the past decades. During the 2019 edition of the Championships, Doha will be welcoming 205 countries and 3,500 athletes with more than 10,000 spectators from outside Qatar.
What are the duties of your department?
Our department includes three committees responsible for (accommodation, transportation and airport services) but we are acting as one team, so we have developed a detailed plan for the department during the championships in addition to the other periodical plans. We have applied these plans during the 2019 Asian athletics championship held in April which helped us evaluate our programs on the ground.
