AL HAWRA a new 2-year-old winner for Al Shaqab Racing

Al Shaqab Racing celebrated a new homebred 2-year-old winner at Pau, France, on Saturday, 3 October, when the filly AL HAWRA (Wootton Bassett x Salwa) opened her scorecard on the first time of asking in the Prix du Vieux Castera. On the fibre sand track, the filly, who is also trained in Pau by Italian native Simone Brogi, was quickly up to the lead in the 1,600m race for 2YO maidens. Once in the straight, she outclassed her rivals under a hands and heels ride from apprentice jockey Anaelle Mekouche. She won by a length, never troubled, in front of THECLIMB (Daryian x Lady Melior) for the winning trainer, who made a one-two, and jockey Jordan Plateaux. The Maurizio Guarnieri-trained DOLCEVITA (INTELLO x CANTALUPA) was further 1¾ lengths behind in third under Rosario Mangione.

By the top sire Wootton Bassett, AL HAWRA is out of the GALILEO mare SALWA who was unraced for H.E. Sheikh Joaan Bin Hamad Al Thani and is a sister to the useful CITY IMAGE. AL HAWRA is just the second foal of racing age for this young mare.
