Qatar volleyball team off to Turkey for Islamic Solidarity Games

DOHA – Qatar national volleyball team left Doha on Friday to Turkey to participate in the fifth edition of the Islamic Solidarity Games which will be held in Turkey’s city of Konya from 9th to 18th of August and will see approximately 6000 athletes from 58 countries.

The Qatar Olympic Committee will have 12 national federations in this year’s edition to compete in 16 sport disciplines, including basketball, volleyball , handball, cycling, athletics, swimming, shooting, Taekwondo, Judo, Karate, weightlifting, wrestling, fencing and gymnastics.

This fifth Islamic Solidary Games were originally planned to be held in September 2021, but rescheduled to August 2022 due to COVID-19 pandemic. The Islamic Solidary Games is a significant sport event that brings together multinational athletes.

These games are regularly organized by the Islamic Solidary Sports Federation , which was founded in May 6, 1985 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia under the patronage of Organization of Islamic Cooperation

Historically, Saudi Arabia hosted these games in 2005, Indonesia’s city of Palembang played a host city in 2013, Azerbaijan’s capital city of Baku organized the fourth edition from 12th to 22nd of May, 2017 and Cameroon was selected to host the sixth edition in 2025.
