Qatari Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, on Monday revealed that Qatar will buy USD 500 million worth of Lebanese government bonds.
In a statement to Qatar News Agency (QNA), he said “the decision was made after a meeting between the Amir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and Lebanese President Michel Aoun during his visit to Beirut where he headed the Qatar delegation at the Arab Economic and Social Development Summit, and after efforts made by Foreign Minister Gebran Bassil.”
He stressed that this step comes to strengthen the Lebanese economy, adding that Qatar has always been committed to supporting Lebanese people in light of the great challenges they face, QNA indicated.
He also said that “this move stems from the profound fraternal ties between the two countries.”
“The Qatari step followed Bassil’s proposal which he made to the Prince of Qatar,” he added.
