Qatar Expresses Concern That Unrest in Myanmar Could Destabilize Security, Stability

The State of Qatar affirmed that it is closely monitoring the recent situation and changes that have taken place in Myanmar, expressing concern that these disturbances may undermine security and stability, and negatively reflect on the protection and respect of human rights and fundamental freedoms, and lead to harm to innocent civilians.

This came in a speech by the State of Qatar during the 29th Special Session of the Human Rights Council to discuss “the human rights implications of the crisis in Myanmar,” which was delivered by Abdullah Maqboul Al Ali, the Acting Charge d’Affairs of the Permanent Delegation of the State of Qatar to the United Nations Office in Geneva.

Al Ali said that the State of Qatar expresses concern that these events will lead to more human rights violations, especially against the Rohingya Muslims in Rakhine State, stressing the need to respect international humanitarian law and international human rights law, conduct independent investigations into all violations and hold those responsible accountable.

He added that the State of Qatar affirms the importance of taking the necessary measures by the Myanmar authorities to protect all minorities, including the Rohingya Muslims, and to ensure that they enjoy all their legitimate rights, especially the right to obtain citizenship and participate in the electoral process, as well as facilitating their safe and voluntary return to their areas and homes, allowing the arrival of humanitarian and relief aid, and working to achieve comprehensive and sustainable development, which will contribute to achieving national reconciliation and stability.

Al Ali stated that the State of Qatar affirms its continued support for the efforts of the international community and all relevant parties to resolve differences through political dialogue in Myanmar, calling on all parties in Myanmar to strengthen national dialogue to reach a peaceful solution to the current crisis that the country is going through to preserve national unity and strengthening the response to the aspirations of the Myanmar people for democracy, peace, and development.
